Renting a car in Morocco offers unparalleled freedom to explore its incredible variety of landscapes. However, driving here can be a unique experience. To ensure your trip is safe and stress-free, here are five crucial tips every renter should know:

1. Know Your Required Documents

At the rental counter (run by our Partner company), you must present:

  • Valid Driver’s License: Your license from your home country is generally accepted.

  • Passport/ID: For identification.

  • Credit Card: Must be in the main driver's name for the security deposit hold. Cash deposits are rare or discouraged. Ensure your credit limit covers the deposit amount (which varies by vehicle and company).

2. The Unwritten Rules of the Road

Driving style in Moroccan cities can be assertive. Here’s what to watch for:

  • City Traffic: Be confident, maintain your lane, and expect motorcycles and bicycles. Horn tapping is less aggressive and more a polite way to signal your presence.

  • Speed Traps: Speed cameras (radars) are common, especially on main highways. Stick strictly to the speed limits (often 60 km/h in towns, 100 km/h on main roads).

  • Police Flashes: If oncoming traffic flashes their headlights at you, it often signals a police checkpoint ahead—a cue to slow down immediately.

3. Parking with Confidence

In most cities, you will encounter uniformed or fluorescent-vested Parking Guards (Gardiens).

  • Acceptance: They manage street parking spots. It is customary to pay a small fee (usually 2 DH to 5 DH for a short stay, or 20 DH per night).

  • Security: Paying this small fee ensures they keep an eye on your car, which provides a layer of security. Always get clarity on the price before you leave your vehicle.

4. Fuel and Tolls

Moroccan motorways (Autoroutes) are excellent but require tolls, which are collected at gates and can be paid for with cash or card. Fuel (Gasoline/Diesel) is readily available, and most stations are full-service—just stay in the car, and the attendant will pump the fuel and take your payment.

5. Inspect and Document Everything

Before driving away from our Partner's lot, thoroughly inspect the car:

  • Damage Check: Use your phone to take clear photos or a video of every scratch, ding, or crack, no matter how small.

  • Fuel/Mileage: Confirm the fuel level and mileage match the record on your contract.

  • Signed Paperwork: Get a copy of the agreed-upon contract, and ensure you get a signed inspection sheet upon return to prevent unwarranted charges.
